Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Legs and Panels

Mill your lumber to thickness. If you are using 8/4 stock for legs, rip them into $1.5" \times 1.5"$ squares. Taper the bottom 6" of the legs on the two inside faces for a more elegant, "lighter" look.

2. Join the Side Frames

Join the side panels to the legs using pocket holes or mortise and tenon joinery.

• The side panels should be inset 1/4" from the front of the legs to create a visual "reveal."

• Repeat for the back panel to connect the two side assemblies.

3. Install the Shelf and Top

• Bottom Shelf: Attach the lower shelf approximately 6" from the floor. This provides structural rigidity and a spot for books.

• The Top: Attach the top using table top fasteners (Z-clips). This is crucial—it allows the wood to expand and contract across its grain without cracking the frame.

4. The Drawer Construction

Build a simple five-piece drawer box.

• Use 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood for the drawer sides for stability.

• The drawer face should have a 1/8" gap (reveal) around all sides within the opening.

5. Finishing Touches

• Sanding: Sand all surfaces up to 220 grit.

• Finish: For bedside stands, a Hardwax Oil (like Rubio Monocoat or Osmo) is excellent because it’s easy to apply and provides a natural feel. Alternatively, use a satin polyurethane if you expect a lot of water glass "sweat" on the surface.

• Batching: If you need two stands, cut all your identical parts at once. It ensures the heights match perfectly.

• Grain Matching: For the best look, try to cut your drawer front from the same board as the front rails so the grain pattern continues vertically.
